How to Be the Best Corgi Mom Ever

How to Be the Best Corgi Mom Ever

TL;DR / Quick Insights:

  • Corgis are smart, sassy, and full of energy. Be ready for quite the entertainment (and a bit of stubbornness).
  • Puppy-proof your house and set up a comfy space just for them.
  • Start to train them early and keep training sessions short, simple, and fun with extra treats and praise—they’re little smarty pants, keeping them engaged will save you at least some nerves.
  • Regular walks and playtime are must-haves to burn off their energy and keep them happy.
  • Socialization is key for raising a confident, well-adjusted dog.
  • Take lots of pictures—those moments are gold!

Being a Corgi mom means a lifestyle of love, laughter, and lots of fur. These little dogs are packed with personality, and they’ll keep you on your toes while filling your heart with joy. Let’s dive into how to be the best Corgi mom ever and make life amazing for you and your fluffy BFF.

Understanding the Corgi Spirit

Corgis are small but mighty, with a big dose of sass to match their intelligence. These herding dogs were bred to work, so they thrive on structure, activity, and mental challenges. But let’s be real—they’re also stubborn and know how to get their way.

Tips:

  • Keep Their Minds Busy: Introduce puzzle toys, agility training, or regular new tricks to keep their sharp minds engaged.
  • Stick to a Routine: Corgis love predictability. Regular meal times, walks, and play sessions help them feel secure and happy.

My Corgi Max has a knack for figuring out how to open cabinets if I’m late feeding him. Lesson learned: stick to the schedule unless I want him raiding the pantry.

Preparing Your Home for a Corgi

Corgis are curious little adventurers, and your home will quickly become their playground. Puppy-proofing is essential, especially during their younger years when everything is chewable.

Tips:

  • Secure Dangerous Items: Electric cords, shoes, and small objects are fair game for a curious Corgi. Move them out of reach (which should not be that hard in regards to their height).
  • Set Up Their Space: A cozy dog bed, a few toys, and a designated “safe spot” will make them feel at home.

When I brought Max home, I didn’t realize how many things were at his eye level. A few chewed-up flip-flops later, I finally got the hang of puppy-proofing.

Training: Patience and Positivity Win

Corgis are incredibly smart, but they also have an independent streak. Training is a must, but it has to be fun and rewarding for them.

Tips:

  • Start with the Basics: Commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come” are essential. Keep sessions short and use high-value treats (like chicken or cheese), that they only get during training sessions.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: When your Corgi gets it right, throw a mini party with treats, praise, and lots of enthusiasm.

Max used to give me the “I know what you want, but I’m not doing it” look. With patience (and those chicken treats), he eventually became a pro at basic commands.

Exercise and Playtime: A Daily Must

Corgis may be small, but they’re packed with energy. Regular exercise isn’t just for their physical health—it keeps them mentally happy, too.

Tips:

  • Walks Are Non-Negotiable: Aim for at least three 20–30 minute walks daily, plus playtime (or two 40-50 minute walks plus playtime).
  • Make It Fun: Corgis love games like fetch, tug-of-war, and even herding balls.

Max thrives on a mix of walks and backyard playtime. If I skip a walk, he lets me know with some very dramatic side-eye.

The Shedding Reality

If you’re not ready for fur on everything, a Corgi might not be for you. Shedding is just part of life with these fluffy friends. Get a lot of lint rollers. And I mean a lot.

Tips:

  • Brush Often: Brushing 2–3 times a week with an undercoat rake helps keep the shedding manageable. But let's make it clear: You will have fur everywhere nevertheless.
  • Invest in Lint Rollers: As I said, trust me, you’ll need more than one.

At first, I thought I could keep Max’s fur contained. Spoiler: I was wrong. Now, I just embrace it—fur is the new glitter, right?

Socializing Your Corgi

Corgis are social butterflies who thrive on interaction. Early socialization is key to raising a confident, well-mannered pup.

Tips:

  • Start Small: Introduce them to other dogs, different kinds of people (bearded, not bearded, big, small, on a bike, in a wheelchair, ...), and new environments gradually.
  • Be Consistent: Regular trips to the park, playdates, or even pet-friendly cafes help build their social skills.

One of Max’s favorite activities is meeting new people at the park. He’s basically the mayor of our neighborhood now.

Capturing the Memories

Life with a Corgi is filled with Instagram-worthy moments. From their quirks to those sweet cuddles, you’ll want to capture it all. So take lots of photos, their expressions and funny habits are pure gold. Or you could create a journal and document milestones and everyday moments—it’s something you’ll treasure forever.

For me, Max’s sploot photos alone could fill an entire photo album. It’s the little moments that make me smile the most.

Why Being a Corgi Mom Is Totally Worth It

Yes, Corgis are a handful. They’re sassy, stubborn, and shed like crazy. But they’re also loyal, loving, and endlessly entertaining. The relationship you’ll build with your Corgi is one of a kind, and every challenge is more than worth it for the joy they bring into your life.
