Interesting Dog Facts and Their Implications

Interesting Dog Facts and Their Implications

|Mason T.

TL;DR / Quick Insights:

  • A wet nose helps dogs smell better, stay cool, and is often a sign of good health.
  • You can estimate a dog’s age by looking at their teeth, energy levels, and even those gray hairs.
  • Your dog chasing their tail can just mean playtime, but can also be a sign for seeking attention, or even health issues. So keep an eye on it.
  • Dogs howl to communicate, express emotions, or respond to sounds they find interesting.

Dogs are full of surprises. They’ll lick your face one minute, howl at your singing the next, and then munch on grass like it’s a delicacy. These quirks make them lovable and just fascinating. Let’s dive into some interesting facts about dogs and what they mean for us dog lovers.

Why Are Dogs’ Noses Wet?

That cold, wet nose isn’t just adorable—it’s a multitool. A wet nose helps trap scent particles, making dogs incredible sniffers. Since dogs have a muuuuch better sense of smell than humans (with some estimates putting their ability to smell at 1,000 to 100,000 times better than ours), they’re such pros at tracking scents and that's why they’re often used in search-and-rescue missions. A wet nose also helps them regulate their temperature since dogs don’t sweat like we can. Instead, they rely on their noses and paw pads to stay cool.

While a wet nose is often a sign of good health, a dry nose doesn’t always mean something’s wrong. If your dog seems happy, healthy, and normal there's nothing to worry about. But if their dry nose is paired with lethargy or other symptoms, it’s definitely time for a vet check.

How Can You Tell How Old a Dog Is?

Estimating a dog’s age isn’t an exact science and there's no way for you to find out with 100% certainty, but there are good clues you can look for. Gray hairs around their muzzle are an obvious sign of advanced age, though some breeds tend to gray earlier than others. In general, if a dog has gray hairs it should be in the second half of their life. Your dog's teeth are another giveaway—puppies have sharp, white teeth, while older dogs have a high chance of showing worn or discolored teeth or even missing some teeth.

Energy levels also play a role. Younger dogs are usually bouncing off the walls, while older ones might prefer sleeping over chasing a ball. For a more accurate assessment, your vet can evaluate their overall health and condition.

Why Do Dogs Chase Their Tails?

Watching a dog chase its tail is really funny and adorable, so I've often wondered what’s behind this behavior. I did some research and came up with these answers:

  • For puppies, it’s usually just about playing and their growing curiosity. They’re figuring out what that moving thing behind them is and having fun while doing it.
  • Older dogs might chase their tails because they are bored and want to grab your attention, especially if they’ve noticed it gets a reaction from you. Adorable. However, excessive tail chasing can indicate stress, too much boredom, or even medical issues like fleas or skin irritations. If it becomes a regular habit, a visit to your vet is a good idea.

Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

If your dog loves munching on grass, you’re not alone—it’s a pretty common behavior. Some dogs eat grass to help themselves when they’re feeling sick, especially with tummy problems. Others do it plain out of boredom or because they like the texture or taste. Grass eating is usually harmless, but if your dog seems obsessed with it or starts vomiting or is having diarrhea frequently, it's signaling an underlying health issue (like allergies). In that case, please talk to your vet and discuss solutions.

Why Do Dogs Howl?

Howling is in your dog's DNA. It's their inner wolf coming out from time to time or rather coming out for certain occasions. Wolfs (and therefore also dogs) howl to communicate—it's their way of expressing themselves. Whether it’s with other dogs or just for letting you know something feels different for them. Other times, it’s emotional. A dog that’s left alone for too long might howl because they’re feeling anxious or stressed out about it. Depart from this more serious reasons there’s also the fun stuff—like howling to sirens, or to music, or even to your singing. To them, these strange sounds are an invitation to join in, and they just can’t resist.

If your dog’s howling seems to be excessive and happening way too often or if it feels to you like it's extremely tied to stress, it might be a good idea to get in contact with a dog trainer or behaviorist. They can help you professionally figure out what’s going on. Activities like puzzle toys or a cozy, relaxing, dog-friendly space just for your dog within your house/apartment can also be a good step toward calming your dog.

Why Do Dogs Lick People?

Annoying to some, encouraged by others—your dog's licking can divide the people (I personally don't mind it). But even if you're not into it, licking is one of your dog’s favorite ways to communicate different feelings or behaviors. And with the right knowledge, we can decipher every sweet little lick.

The most common reason behind dogs licking people is that it's just a little sign of their affection—a sweet “I love you!” so to say. But it’s not always about love. Sometimes, your skin just tastes so good they can't resist (sorry, but it’s true). Salty skin after a workout for example or the faint trace of food on your hands after cooking can make you irresistible for a little lick.

Licking can also be a way for dogs to comfort themselves or show they’re feeling submissive. It’s their way of showing respect for you. But If the licking feels constant or excessive, try gently redirecting them to a toy or giving them a task to focus on. And if it seems more like a compulsion, check in with your vet or a trainer for extra guidance

The Bottom Line

Dogs are funny and do funny things. But their behaviors tell us a lot about what they need and who they are. So becoming a Han Solo in understanding your Chewbacca (equivalent for your dog) will bring your connection to the next deeper level. It will make you a dog whisperer and bring a lot of joy and pride. Keep following your instincts and if something feels off, don’t ignore your cut feeling—talk to your vet. You know your dog best and if you have the feeling something is not quite right, there's a high chance you're probably right.
