The Best Diet for Your Dog: What to Feed and What to Avoid

|Laura C.

TL;DR / Quick Insights:

  • Every Dog needs a balanced diet with proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins, and minerals to stay healthy.
  • High-quality commercial food is often very good and an easy, reliable choice, but look for meat as the first ingredient and make sure there are no artificial additives.
  • Absolutely avoid toxic foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, and xylitol, as they will harm your dog.
  • Adjust your dog’s diet based on their life stage (puppy, adult, or senior) and any specific health needs.

Feeding your dog goes beyond just filling their bowl; it’s about providing them with the nutrition they need to be happy and healthy. With the variety of diets available—from kibble to raw to homemade—it can be a little overwhelming. But don’t worry; we’re here to help you navigate the options and figure out what’s best for your furry BFF.

Understanding Your Dog’s Nutritional Needs

Every dog is built differently, but what they have in common is that they all need the same basic ingredients in their diet to be healthy. Following is a short list, of all the ingredients that make up a well-balanced meal:

  • Proteins: First things first. Proteins are the base of your dog’s diet. They help your dog with growth, muscle repair and building strong tissues. Look for meats, fish, eggs and even some legumes as the main ingredients with your dog's food.
  • Fats: Healthy fats are your dog’s energy boosters and help them with their cell function. Fish oil, flaxseed and chicken fat are great examples for this kind of category. And luckily they are especially yummy. Your dog will love it.
  • Carbs: Yes, just like bodybuilders, your dogs need carbs too! They provide energy and support good digestion. Look for grains like rice, oats and barley and vegetables like sweet potatoes. Yummy!
  • Vitamins and Minerals: These help with a lot of things, like bone health and a shiny coat. A balanced diet will cover most of these but you also can get supplements if your vet recommends them.

What to Feed My Dog?

The good news is there are many different ways of feeding your dog in a healthy way—you just have to choose the one that works best for you and them

  • High-Quality Commercial Dog Food: I think this is the easiest, most logical, and most popular option. And luckily it's a very good option. Look for brands that list real meat (like chicken or beef) as the first ingredient. But avoid dog food with fillers like corn or soy and don’t go for brands that use artificial additives.
  • Homemade Diets: If you like to cook, why not prepare your dog’s meals yourself? It will be fun. Just remember, the right amount and balance is key. Include proteins, fats, carbs, and vitamins. Try to prepare the food in prepacked portions and use a deep freezer to keep them fresh for a couple of weeks. This makes the whole process a lot easier and will last longer (so you only have to do it maybe once every month). But definitely consult with your vet or a canine nutritionist here before starting, just to make sure you’re meeting all the requirements for your dog’s needs.
  • Raw Diets: Some owners love raw feeding saying it’s what dogs are meant to eat. While it has benefits, raw diets also have risks like bacteria or imbalanced nutrition. Just like with the homemade diets: If you do this, definitely work very closely with your vet in order to do this right and avoid harming your dog's health unintentionally.

Foods to Avoid

Dogs are curious eaters and love to try everything that looks eatable, which is fine in most cases. But some human foods are straight-up dangerous for them. Keep these items off the menu at all costs and always have open eyes when outside—somebody might have dropped some of these on the ground (ready to be sniffed up by your hungry furry friend):

  • Chocolate: ABSOLUTELY avoid!! Chocolate contains theobromine which dogs can’t process and therefore will make them very very sick. Even a little can be toxic!
  • Grapes and Raisins: These can cause sudden kidney failure. Avoid!
  • Onions and Garlic: Really bad for dog's red blood cells and can lead to anemia. No bueno!
  • Xylitol: This stuff is found in most sugar-free foods or candy and can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar which then again can lead to liver failure. Bad stuff.
  • Avocados: As yummy as they are for us humans, avocados contain persin which can upset your dog’s stomach in large amounts. Ouch!

How To Adjust for Special Dietary Needs

Just like us, dogs’ dietary needs change depending on their age, health, and lifestyle. Finding the right food for where they’re at in life can make all the difference in keeping them happy and healthy. Here’s how to tweak their meals to fit their stage:

  • Puppies: These little furballs are growing like crazy and need food that can keep up with their energy and development. Look for puppy-specific food (the good stuff from reputable brands) to make sure they’re getting all the protein, calories, and nutrients they need. Think of it as the foundation for a healthy, active life.
  • Senior Dogs: Your older buddy might be slowing down, but their diet still matters—a lot. They need fewer calories to avoid packing on extra weight, but more fiber to keep their digestion on track. Senior dog foods are designed with all of this in mind, often including ingredients to support joint health and mobility. It’s like giving them a little boost to stay comfy and active in their golden years.
  • Dogs with Health Conditions: If your dog has allergies, kidney problems, or other health concerns, their diet may need special attention. This is where your vet becomes your go-to expert. They can guide you toward the right foods or even help you create a custom meal plan that’s tailored to your dog’s unique needs.

The Bottom Line

Feeding your dog the right diet is one of the best ways to keep them happy, healthy, and with strong wagging tails. No matter if you're picking high-quality commercial food, or preparing homemade meals, the key is always a good balance and a good understanding of your dog’s unique needs. And as usual: Please always, always consult your vet before making major changes to your dog's diet.
