How to Keep A Corgi Happy and Healthy

|Mason T.

TL;DR / Quick Insights:

  • Corgis are prone to joint issues like hip dysplasia, so keep them active every day, prevent high jumps, and avoid stairs.
  • Plan regular vet visits to catch health issues like cataracts early on.
  • Watch their diet—Corgis are experts at turning big appetites into bigger waistlines.
  • Don’t forget their teeth! Dental care isn’t just about fresh breath—it’s about overall health.

Corgis are a joy to have around. With their adorable waddle, big personalities, and constant curiosity, they bring endless happiness. But like any breed, they have their own set of health concerns. The good news? With some simple steps, you can keep your little fluffball happy and healthy for years to come. Here’s what to watch out for and how to help.

Joint Health: Protecting Those Long Backs and Short Legs

Corgis aren’t built for high-impact activities, and their unique shape (long backs, short legs) makes them more likely to develop joint problems like hip dysplasia or Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).

  • Keep Them Lean: Extra weight is hard on their joints. Stick to portion-controlled meals and skip the table scraps. Short walks and swimming are great low-impact exercises. My friend’s Corgi, Ollie, started hydrotherapy after showing early signs of hip issues—it’s now his favorite activity, and his joints are doing great.
  • Ramps Are Your Best Friend: Corgis love cuddling on the couch, but jumping up and down can strain their back. Invest in a ramp or some pet stairs to make things easier on them.

Eye Health: Watching Out for Vision Problems

Corgis can be prone to eye issues like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or cataracts. Early detection is key to keeping their vision sharp.

  • Regular Check-Ups Matter: If your Corgi starts bumping into things or hesitating in low light, it might be time for a vet visit. My neighbor’s Corgi, Luna, had cataracts caught early, and surgery saved her eyesight.
  • Protect Their Peepers: Avoid rough play near their face and limit their time in direct sunlight. You can also ask your vet about eye-supporting supplements.

Obesity: Keeping That Love for Food in Check

Corgis love to eat—sometimes a little too much. That extra weight can lead to joint pain, diabetes, and other health problems.

  • Skip the Extra Treats: Measure their food and choose healthy snacks like carrots or green beans. Max, my own Corgi, slimmed down after I swapped high-calorie treats for veggie sticks. He’s still obsessed with food, but now it’s the healthy kind.
  • Make Exercise Fun: Regular walks, fetch, or even using a puzzle feeder can keep your Corgi moving and mentally stimulated.

Dental Health: It’s More Than Just Fresh Breath

Neglecting your Corgi’s teeth can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and other health problems.

  • Start Early: Get your pup used to having their teeth brushed with dog-safe toothpaste. My neighbor’s Corgi actually looks forward to his daily brushing because the toothpaste tastes like chicken.
  • Use Dental Chews and Toys: These can help reduce plaque between brushings, but they’re no substitute for regular cleanings at the vet.

Why It’s Worth It

Caring for your Corgi’s health isn’t just about adding years to their life—it’s about making sure those years are full of energy, fun, and snuggles. By being proactive about their joints, eyes, weight, and dental health, you’re giving them the best shot at a happy, comfortable life.
