The Herding Instinct: Why Is My Corgi Nipping Everyone?
If your Corgi nips at your heels, tries to “herd” your kids, or corrals your other pets, congratulations—you’ve got yourself a natural-born herder. While it’s fascinating to see their instincts in action, nipping can be a little, well, annoying (and painful!).
Redirect Their Energy
Instead of letting them channel that herding instinct on your family, give them something productive to do. Fetch, agility training, or even tug-of-war can work wonders. My Corgi, Max, was obsessed with nipping my ankles during family gatherings (it’s cute until it’s not). A quick game of fetch with his favorite squeaky toy and the problem solved.
Teach “No Nipping”
When they start to nip, firmly say “no” and immediately redirect them to a toy. If they bite the toy instead, praise them like they just won Best Dog Ever. They’ll quickly learn that toys are for biting—humans are not.

Begin by leaving them alone for just a few minutes, then gradually increase the time. Always make departures and arrivals low-key—no dramatic goodbyes or over-the-top hellos. You want them to see alone time as no big deal (this one's really important!).
Create a Comfort Zone
Set them up with a cozy space (like their crate or dog bed) and leave them with a puzzle toy or a treat-stuffed Kong. Calming music or white noise can also help. Max loves his Kong filled with peanut butter—it keeps him busy and happy while I'm on my way.
If you do it right, your Corgi should be fine with 2-4 hours of alone time. But don't stretch it too much. As said, they love being with their humans—so try not to hurt their feelings.
