- Baby gates are your friend: Use them to block off rooms you’d rather keep off-limits, like the kitchen or the fancy carpeted living room. A designated puppy zone (like your living room or a sectioned-off area) will keep them safe and make your life way easier.
When Max, my Corgi, first came home, he was obsessed with the TV remote. Lesson learned: anything within puppy-level reach is fair game in their eyes.
Comfort and Sleep: The Perfect Puppy Den
Your new pup is leaving behind their littermates and familiar surroundings, which is (as you can imagine) a big deal. Therefore a designated cozy, secure sleeping area just for them will help them to adjust quickly.
- The dog bed: Invest in a soft, durable puppy bed and place it in a quiet, low-traffic corner. Add a blanket or toy that smells like their litter or breeder (if you have one). Trust me, it’s like a comfort zone for their first few nights. Make sure, that there is nothing on the bed, that they can chew on and swallow easily—again, they could try to eat anything.
- Routine is everything: Start establishing a bedtime routine from day one. A little quiet cuddle time or a quick potty break before bed can help them settle down and get used to their new home.
Pro tip: Expect a few restless nights at the start—it’s normal! Puppies may whine or cry and might need 1-3 bathroom breaks during the night. But a steady routine will help them settle in faster.
Nutrition and Feeding: Set Them Up for Growth
Corgis might be small, but they’re big on appetite! Choosing the right high-quality food and setting up a feeding routine is essential.

Fun fact: Max loved his puzzle feeder—it turned mealtime into a mini adventure and slowed him down from inhaling his food too quickly.

- Potty training 101: Consistency is key. Take them out first thing in the morning, 5-10 minutes after meals, and of course before bed. Use the same spot, and reward them like crazy when they get it right. You can also try to establish a little keyword when they are doing their business. With Max, it helped him release more quickly, because he knew, when he heard my keywords that it was time to go. This will not work with all ages though—at least from my experience.
